UNS S29225 is a high-strength, non-magnetic austenitic stainless steel. Much like other Cr-Mn-N (Chromium-Manganese-Nitrogen) alloys, it is engineered to provide a stable austenitic structure and high mechanical performance without relying heavily on expensive nickel.
The defining characteristic of S29225 is the use of Nitrogen as a powerful austenite stabilizer and strengthening agent. This allows the material to achieve yield strengths significantly higher than standard 300-series stainless steels while remaining completely non-magnetic, even after severe cold working.
The balance of Chromium and Manganese ensures corrosion resistance and phase stability:
| Element | Weight % |
| Chromium (Cr) | 17.0 â 20.0% |
| Manganese (Mn) | 14.0 â 16.0% |
| Nitrogen (N) | 0.30 â 0.50% |
| Nickel (Ni) | 1.5 â 3.0% |
| Carbon (C) | $\leq$ 0.10% |
| Silicon (Si) | $\leq$ 1.00% |
S29225 is noted for its excellent "strength-to-weight" ratio compared to standard austenitics.
Yield Strength ($0.2\%$ Offset): Typically $\geq 450$ MPa (nearly double that of 316L).
Tensile Strength: $\geq 800$ MPa.
Magnetic Permeability: $\mu \leq 1.01$ (remains non-magnetic under high stress).
Ductility: Maintains high elongation ($\geq 30\%$) despite its high strength.
Due to its unique combination of zero magnetism and high physical toughness, S29225 round bars are primarily used in:
Oil & Gas: Non-magnetic drill collars (NMDC) and housing for MWD (Measurement While Drilling) tools, where magnetic interference would disrupt directional sensors.
Medical Imaging: Structural components for MRI rooms and scanners.
Electrical Engineering: Retaining rings for generators and components for high-voltage transformers where eddy current losses must be minimized.
Marine Hardware: Fasteners and shafts for specialized naval vessels requiring low magnetic signatures.
While 316L is the "workhorse" of stainless steel, S29225 offers distinct advantages for specific engineering challenges:
Magnetism: 316L can become slightly magnetic when cold-worked or welded; S29225 stays inert.
Strength: S29225 allows for thinner, lighter components due to its higher base yield strength.
Cost: By replacing a large portion of Nickel with Manganese and Nitrogen, S29225 can offer more stable pricing during nickel market volatility.
