Product Description

AISI 416 (WNr. 1.4005) is a martensitic, free-machining stainless steel known for being the most easily machinable of all stainless steel grades. It is primarily used in applications requiring high volume production of components that need moderate corrosion resistance and high mechanical properties.

Technical Profile: SS 416 Round Bars

Chemical Composition (%)

Grade 416 is essentially a 410 stainless steel with added sulfur, which acts as a lubricant to prevent "galling" during machining and facilitates chip breaking.

Element Range (%)
Chromium (Cr) 12.00 a 14.00
Manganese (Mn) 1.25 max
Sulfur (S) 0.15 min
Carbon (C) 0.15 max
Silicon (Si) 1.00 max
Phosphorus (P) 0.06 max

Mechanical Properties (Typical for Condition T)

416 stainless steel can be heat treated to achieve high strength and hardness levels, though this slightly impacts its ductility.

  • Tensile Strength: $\ge 515$ MPa

  • Yield Strength (0.2% Offset): $\ge 275$ MPa

  • Elongation: $15\% - 30\%$ (depending on temper)

  • Hardness (Brinell): ~262 max (in annealed condition)

Key Characteristics

  • Machinability: Boasts a machinability rating of approximately 85% compared to free-machining carbon steels (like 12L14). It allows for higher cutting speeds and longer tool life.

  • Corrosion Resistance: Resistant to fresh water, steam, food acids, and many organic chemicals. However, due to the high sulfur content, it has lower corrosion resistance than non-free-machining grades like 410 or 304.

  • Magnetic Properties: Like all martensitic steels, 416 is highly magnetic in both the annealed and hardened conditions.

  • Heat Treatment: Can be hardened by oil quenching from $925A \text{C}$ to $1010A \text{C}$ followed by tempering to achieve specific mechanical requirements.

Common Applications

Due to its combination of high productivity and mechanical strength, it is standard for:

  • Pump Shafts and Valve Components

  • Automatic Screw Machine Parts

  • Gears, Bolts, and Nut Fasteners

  • Washing Machine Components

  • Electrical Motor Shafts
