Industrial grub screws, also known as set screws, are headless fasteners used to secure a component (like a gear, pulley, or collar) onto a rotating shaft. They are designed to be driven through a threaded hole in the component until the tip of the screw presses firmly against the shaft, preventing any relative movement.

Tip Designs & Applications

The "point" or tip of a grub screw determines how it grips the shaft:

• Cup Point: The most common industrial tip. It features a hollowed-out end that digs into the shaft for a permanent or semi-permanent hold.

• Flat Point: Used when the screw will be frequently adjusted. It does not damage the shaft surface.

• Cone Point: A sharp, pointed tip that provides the highest vertical and torsional holding power by acting like a pivot or wedge.

• Dog Point: Features a flat, extended cylindrical tip that fits into a pre-drilled hole or groove in the shaft, acting like a pin.

Material Selection for Industrial Use

• Alloy Steel (Grade 14.9/12.9): The standard for heavy machinery. These offer the highest hardness and tensile strength to prevent the hex socket from stripping under high torque. They typically have a black oxide finish.

• 304/316 Stainless Steel: Essential for food processing equipment, medical devices, and marine hardware where hygiene or corrosion resistance is the priority over absolute hardness.
