Product Description

EN AW-5183 (S Al 5183 / AlMg4.5Mn0.7) is a premium aluminum-magnesium-manganese welding consumable available in continuous spools for MIG (GMAW) welding and cut straight lengths for TIG (GTAW) welding.

Engineered specifically to match the high tensile and yield strength requirements of structural 5xxx-series alloys (particularly EN AW-5083), it provides significantly higher as-welded joint strength than standard ER5356 or ER4043 wire.

Chemical Composition (EN ISO 18273 / AWS A5.10)

  • Magnesium (Mg): 4.30 to 5.20 percent

  • Manganese (Mn): 0.50 to 1.00 percent

  • Chromium (Cr): 0.05 to 0.25 percent

  • Titanium (Ti): 0.15 percent maximum

  • Iron (Fe): 0.40 percent maximum

  • Silicon (Si): 0.40 percent maximum

  • Zinc (Zn): 0.25 percent maximum

  • Copper (Cu): 0.10 percent maximum

  • Aluminum (Al): Balance

Mechanical and Thermal Properties (As-Welded)

  • Tensile Strength: 275 MPa minimum (40 ksi)

  • Yield Strength: 130 MPa minimum (19 ksi)

  • Elongation: 17 percent minimum

  • Melting Range: 574 to 638 degrees Celsius

  • Anodizing Match: Excellent silver and white color match with 5xxx base metals

Typical Applications and Technical Considerations

  • Primary Marine and Industrial Uses: Shipbuilding hulls, offshore oil platforms, LNG tank storage, high-stress pressure vessels, railway cars, and heavy structural frames.

  • Base Metal Matching: Ideal for joining EN AW-5083, EN AW-5086, EN AW-5456, and EN AW-7039.

  • Shielding Gas Recommendations:

    • TIG (GTAW): 100 percent Argon (I1)

    • MIG (GMAW): 100 percent Argon or Argon/Helium mixtures (I3) for improved penetration on plate thicknesses over 6 mm.

Temperature Warning: Because the magnesium content exceeds 3.0 percent, welds made using EN AW-5183 are susceptible to stress corrosion cracking if operated in continuous service temperatures exceeding 65 degrees Celsius (150 degrees Fahrenheit).
