Teflon barsâchemically known as Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) bar stockâare high-performance engineering thermoplastic profiles (rounds, squares, sheet/flats, and hollow tubes). They are widely specified for extreme environments requiring near-zero friction, exceptional chemical inertness, wide thermal stability, and high dielectric strength.
While Virgin PTFE offers the highest purity and electrical insulation, unfilled PTFE is prone to mechanical deformation under continuous load ("cold flow" or creep). Commercial bars are frequently alloyed with performance fillers:
| Grade / Compound | Composition | Key Advantages | Typical Applications |
| Virgin PTFE | 100% Pure PTFE | Maximum chemical resistance, FDA food contact compliance, superior dielectric strength. | Chemical seals, gaskets, labware, electrical insulators. |
| Glass-Filled (15â25%) | PTFE + Glass Fiber | Significantly reduced cold flow/creep, increased wear resistance, higher compressive strength. | Valve seats, structural gaskets, heavy-duty mechanical bearings. |
| Carbon-Filled (15â25%) | PTFE + Carbon Powder | Enhanced wear resistance, high thermal conductivity, antistatic / electrically conductive options. | Piston rings, dynamic seals, high-speed dry bearings. |
| Bronze-Filled (40â60%) | PTFE + Bronze Powder | Highest hardness and compressive strength, superior thermal dissipation, low deformation under load. | Hydraulic piston guides, wear bands, heavy-duty sliding bearings. |
| Graphite-Filled (5â15%) | PTFE + Graphite | Ultra-low coefficient of friction, excellent dry-running properties, non-abrasive to mating soft shafts. | Dry seals, sleeve bearings in non-lubricated systems. |
Temperature Range: Continuous operating limits from -200°C to +260°C (-328°F to +500°F).
Coefficient of Friction: Extremely low static/dynamic friction ($\mu \approx 0.05 \text{ to } 0.10$), preventing stick-slip behavior.
Chemical Inertness: Impervious to virtually all industrial chemicals, solvents, and acids (attacked only by molten alkali metals and elemental fluorine at high pressures).
Water Absorption: Non-hygroscopic ($< 0.01\%$), ensuring dimensional stability in humid or submerged applications.
Machinability: Easily turned, milled, and drilled using standard metalworking tooling, though sharp tools and high speeds are required to prevent stock deflection.
