Product Description

Material Overview

Stainless Steel CF8C (UNS J92710 / ASTM A351 CF8C) is a columbium (niobium) stabilized austenitic stainless steel casting alloy. It is the cast equivalent of wrought AISI 347 stainless steel. Containing 18% chromium and 9% nickel, CF8C is stabilized with columbium to prevent chromium carbide precipitation in the heat-affected zone, providing superior resistance to intergranular corrosion at elevated temperatures ranging from 425°C to 815°C (800°F to 1500°F).

CF8C Scrap & Foundry Grade Characteristics

  • Types of Scrap: Foundry gates, risers, runners, defective castings, valve bodies, pump casings, manifold scrap, machining turnings, and solid re-melt stock.

  • Scrap Classifications & Forms:

    • Solid Foundry Scrap: Heavy cast returns, gates, risers, and structural offcuts (ideal for direct induction furnace re-melting).

    • Loose Scrap: Machine-shop turnings, borings, and small cut-offs (must be clean, dry, and free of oil or coolant contamination).

    • Clean Scrap Requirements: Free from carbon steel contaminants, non-ferrous metals, slag, dirt, moisture, or high-sulfur compounds.

  • Sorting & Identification:

    • Non-Magnetic Response: Non-magnetic in the solution-annealed state, though slight magnetism may be detected depending on the delta-ferrite content (typically 5% to 15% ferrite in castings).

    • PMI / XRF Testing: Critical to verify Niobium/Columbium additions (stabilizing agent) to distinguish CF8C from standard CF8 (Type 304 cast equivalent) or CF8M (Type 316 cast equivalent).

Key Industry Standards & Specifications

  • ASTM Standard: ASTM A351 (Grade CF8C), ASTM A743 (Grade CF8C), ASTM A744

  • ASME Standard: ASME SA351 (Grade CF8C)

  • UNS Designation: UNS J92710

  • Wrought Equivalent: AISI 347 (UNS S34700) / EN 1.4550 (X6CrNiNb18-10)

  • HS Code: 7204.49 (Stainless Steel Scrap) / 7325.99 (Cast Articles of Stainless Steel)
