Stainless steel carriage bolts, also known as coach bolts, are specialized fasteners designed for a smooth finish and secure, one-sided installation. Their unique design features a mushroom-shaped domed head with a square neck underneath that prevents the bolt from spinning while you tighten the nut.

How Carriage Bolts Work

• Self-Locking: The square neck is designed to "bite" into the material (typically wood) or fit into a pre-punched square hole in metal. This locks the bolt in place so it won't rotate when you're tightening the nut from the other side.

• Security: Because the head is smooth and has no slot for a screwdriver or wrench, these bolts are often used for tamper-resistance on the "outside" of structures like gates and fences.

• Installation: You typically tap the head with a hammer to seat the square neck into the material, then secure it with a washer and nut on the threaded end.

Common Material Grades

Stainless steel is preferred for carriage bolts because it offers excellent corrosion resistance, especially for outdoor or wet environments.

• 304 Stainless (18-8): The most common grade. It is suitable for general outdoor use, furniture, and decking.

• 316 Stainless: Includes molybdenum for superior protection against saltwater and chemicals. This is the standard choice for marine applications or projects near the coast.
