Material Overview
Stainless Steel 304 (UNS S30400 / EN 1.4301 / JIS SUS304 / 18-8) is the most widely used austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steel globally. Containing nominally 18% chromium and 8% nickel, it exhibits excellent atmospheric corrosion resistance, high formability, and good weldability. Type 304 scrap serves as a primary raw material charge for stainless steel mills and foundries.

304 Scrap Classifications & Characteristics
Types of Scrap: Sheet skeletons, plate cut-offs, pipe/tube crops, stamping punchings, wire offcuts, forging ends, CNC turnings, and solid foundry melt stock.
Scrap Grades & Forms:
Solids (18-8 Stainless Scrap): Heavy clean plate, sheet cuttings, and structural pieces free of non-ferrous metals, attachments, dirt, or excessive rust.
Turnings & Borings: Machining chips and lathe swarf (must be degreased and free of high-sulfur oils or carbon steel mixing).
Baled / Bundled Scrap: Hydraulically compressed sheet punchings or skeleton scrap prepared for rapid furnace charging.
Sorting & Identification:
Non-Magnetic Response: Non-magnetic in annealed condition, distinguishing it from ferritic (430) or martensitic (410, 17-4PH) grades.
PMI / XRF Testing: Verification of 8% to 10.5% Nickel and 18% Chromium is standard to separate 304 from 316 (which contains 2% Mo) or 200-series low-nickel stainless grades.
