MSRR 6113 is a high-integrity, aerospace-grade alloy steel specification defined by Rolls-Royce. It is a low-alloy, high-strength steel, typically of the Nickel-Chromium-Molybdenum (Ni-Cr-Mo) family, and is the Rolls-Royce equivalent to the AMS 6414 or AISI 4340 (Vacuum Arc Remelted) standards.
This grade is specifically engineered for critical, highly stressed components within gas turbine engines and aerospace structures where exceptional cleanliness and fatigue life are mandatory.
MSRR 6113 is produced using premium melting techniques (VAR or VIM-VAR) to ensure the material is virtually free of non-metallic inclusions.
| Element | Typical Range (%) |
| Carbon (C) | 0.38 a 0.43 |
| Nickel (Ni) | 1.65 a 2.00 |
| Chromium (Cr) | 0.70 a 0.90 |
| Molybdenum (Mo) | 0.20 a 0.30 |
| Manganese (Mn) | 0.60 a 0.85 |
| Silicon (Si) | 0.15 a 0.35 |
| Sulfur (S) | $\le 0.010$ (Ultra-low) |
| Phosphorus (P) | $\le 0.010$ (Ultra-low) |
The mechanical properties of MSRR 6113 are highly dependent on the heat treatment (hardening and tempering) applied to meet specific Rolls-Royce engine requirements.
Tensile Strength ($R_m$): Typically ranges from 1,100 MPa to 1,450 MPa.
Yield Strength ($R_{p0.2}$): Typically $\ge 900$ MPa.
Impact Strength: Excellent sub-zero toughness, a critical requirement for aerospace materials operating at high altitudes.
Hardenability: Excellent through-hardening characteristics, ensuring uniform properties in large diameter bars and heavy-wall rings.
Vacuum Arc Remelting (VAR): The MSRR 6113 specification strictly requires VAR processing to eliminate impurities. This results in superior transverse mechanical properties and high fracture toughness.
Fatigue Performance: Because the steel is "clean," it has a very high resistance to fatigue crack initiation, making it suitable for rotating parts.
Wear Resistance: Can be surface hardened via nitriding or induction hardening to provide a wear-resistant skin while maintaining a tough core.
MSRR 6113 Bars & Rods:
Main engine shafts and power transmission shafts.
High-strength aerospace fasteners and studs.
Torsion bars and structural connectors.
MSRR 6113 Rings:
Forged and rolled rings for engine casings.
Bearing housings and diaphragm spacers.
Sealing rings and structural flanges within the compressor or turbine sections.
