Inconel 718 (UNS N07718 / DIN 2.4668) is a premium, age-hardenable nickel-chromium superalloy that offers high yield, tensile, and creep-rupture strengths at temperatures up to 704C (1300F), along with exceptional cryogenic performance.
Unlike many other titanium-aluminum hardened superalloys, its higher Niobium content (4.75%5.50%) slows down precipitation kinetics. This unique metallurgy permits the alloy to be welded, repaired, or finished across multiple profiles without a high risk of strain-age or post-weld cracking.
Manufacturing Profile: Typically processed via vacuum induction melting (VIM) followed by vacuum arc remelting (VAR). They are supplied in a cold-drawn bright finish, smooth-turned, or centerless-ground state to meet strict dimensional tolerances (H8 to H13).
Common Industry Specifications:AMS 5662 (supplied in the solution-annealed state for easier initial machining) and AMS 5663 (supplied in the fully precipitation age-hardened state for maximum strength).
Primary Use: Critical high-torque components, aerospace jet engine shafts, instrumentation downhole tool joints, and heavy-duty industrial fasteners.
Structural Attributes: Retains notable surface integrity and high fatigue limits under severe cyclic heating and cooling. Often available in broad custom widths up to 500 mm.
Primary Use: High-temperature furnace framework, airframe spacers, thrust-reverser component blocks, and specialized structural framing in chemical or nuclear processing lines.
Manufacturing Profile: Produced via seamless rolled ring forging (using radial-axial mills for large outer diameters up to 1800mm) or open-die mandrel forging. This ensures an optimal circumferential grain flow, eliminating the weak points associated with welding or casting interfaces.
Primary Use: Gas turbine casing rings, rocket motor pressure-vessel flanges, nuclear fuel spacer assemblies, and high-pressure subsea valve seats.
Density:$8.19\text{ g/cm}^3$ (Annealed) to $8.22\text{ g/cm}^3$ (Aged)
Melting Range: 1260C to 1336C (2300F to 2437F)
Fully Aged Mechanical Limits: Yield strength of $\ge\text{ 1034 MPa (150 ksi)}$ and an ultimate tensile strength reaching $\ge\text{ 1275 MPa (185 ksi)}$.
Corrosion Resistance: Immune to chloride-ion stress corrosion cracking (SCC), while offering outstanding performance in sour gas ($H_2S$ and $CO_2$) fields compliant with NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156.
