UNS N06601 (popularly known as Inconel 601 / DIN 2.4851 / NiCr23Fe) is a general-purpose nickel-chromium-iron superalloy. It is uniquely engineered to provide outstanding resistance to high-temperature oxidation and spalling at temperatures reaching up to 1180C (2150F).
While alternative alloys like Inconel 625 focus heavily on managing severe aqueous or marine corrosion, Inconel 601 is specifically optimized for extreme thermal processing environments.
The critical metallurgical feature of Inconel 601 is its controlled addition of 1.0% to 1.7% Aluminum.
When subjected to elevated temperatures, the aluminum acts alongside the chromium matrix to form an interlocking, tightly adherent oxide scale. This passive film strongly resists flaking or "spalling" during aggressive thermal cycling, protecting the core of the round bar from deep structural oxidation, carburization, and nitriding atmospheres.
Governing Specification:ASTM B166 / ASME SB166 (Standard Specification for Nickel-Chromium-Iron Alloys Rod, Bar, and Wire).
Aerospace Standard: AMS 5715 (Bars, Forgings, and Rings).
Delivery Conditions: Bars cannot be hardened via thermal heat treatments; they are strengthened exclusively via cold-working or solid-solution mechanisms. They are typically supplied in the Solution-Annealed state to optimize creep-rupture ductility and ease subsequent machining phases.
Finishes: Available as hot-rolled pickled, peeled/rough turned, or high-accuracy centerless bright ground for tight dimensional linearity.
Nickel (Ni): 58.0 63.0% (Provides a highly stable face-centered-cubic austenitic matrix)
Chromium (Cr): 21.0 25.0% (Forms primary oxidation passivation)
Aluminum (Al): 1.0 1.7% (Forms the critical anti-spalling interlocking oxide scale)
Iron (Fe): Balance (~14.0% 18.0%)
Density:$8.11 \text{ g/cm}^3$ ($0.293 \text{ lb/in}^3$)
Melting Range: 1360C 1411C (2480F 2571F)
Tensile Strength:$\ge$ 550 MPa (80 ksi)
Yield Strength (0.2% Offset):$\ge$ 205 MPa (30 ksi)
Elongation at Break:$\ge$ 30% (Ensures high ductility during severe forming paths)
If you are sourcing specific round bar geometries or dynamic precision feedstock for industrial assemblies, several standardized configurations are widely available:
For High-Precision Machining: The Bright Inconel 601 Round Bar provides a dense cross-sectional stability with a bright finish, designed for valve systems, nuclear infrastructure, and petroleum processing equipment.
For Fine Tooling & Fastener Feedstock: The 12 mm Inconel 601 Roundbar comes in standard 6-meter lengths, ideal for immediate reduction or machining into high-temperature fasteners and pins.
For Mid-Sized Structural Reinforcements: The Inconel 601 Round Bar - Color: Silver features a precise 20mm thickness, ensuring dependable durability and compatibility when assembling thermal framing or furnace hardware components.
