UNS N06600 (commonly known as Inconel 600 / DIN 2.4816 / NiCr15Fe) is a foundational nickel-chromium-iron superalloy. It is a solid-solution strengthened alloy engineered for structural stability, excellent oxidation resistance, and corrosion protection from cryogenic zones up to 1093°C (2000°F).
While alternative variations like Inconel 601 add aluminum to handle high-temperature cyclic flaking, Inconel 600 relies on an ultra-high nickel base to withstand heavily reducing environments and prevent halogenous (chloride-ion) attacks.
The defining engineering attribute of UNS N06600 is its 72% Minimum Nickel content. In chemical and nuclear systems, standard austenitic stainless steels (such as 316L) are vulnerable to catastrophic Chloride Stress-Corrosion Cracking (SCC) in hot, high-pressure aqueous environments. The massive nickel concentration in Inconel 600 renders the alloy virtually immune to this specific failure mechanism.
Nickel (Ni): 72.0% Minimum (Provides core stability and SCC immunity)
Chromium (Cr): 14.0 â 17.0% (Provides high-temperature oxidation and acid passivation)
Iron (Fe): 6.0 â 10.0%
Carbon (C): 0.15% Maximum
Primary Bar Specification: ASTM B166 / ASME SB166 (Standard Specification for Nickel-Chromium-Iron Alloys Rod, Bar, and Wire).
Delivery Conditions: Bars cannot be hardened via thermal heat treatments; they are hardened exclusively via cold-working. For high-temperature or highly corrosive environments, bars are typically specified in the Annealed condition to resolve internal stresses and achieve consistent grain uniformity.
Finishes: Available as hot-rolled pickled, peeled/rough turned, or high-accuracy centerless bright ground for tight dimensional linearity.
Density: $8.47 \text{ g/cm}^3$ ($0.306 \text{ lb/in}^3$)
Melting Range: 1354°C â 1413°C (2470°F â 2575°F)
Tensile Strength: $\ge$ 550 MPa (80 ksi)
Yield Strength (0.2% Offset): $\ge$ 240 MPa (35 ksi)
Elongation at Break: $\ge$ 35% (Highly ductile in the annealed state)
If you are sourcing specific round bar geometries or dynamic precision feedstock for industrial assemblies, several standardized variations are widely available:
For High-Precision Machining: The Inconel 600 Round Bar - Centerless Ground features an excellent centerless bright ground surface profile, serving as ideal material for high-precision components.
For Small Structural Support & Pins: The Inconel 600 Round Bars - 10mm provides dense cross-sectional stability with precise dimensions, designed primarily for high-temperature settings or structural support elements.
For Fine Fastener Feedstock: The Inconel 600 Round Bar - 8mm offers a polished finish, making it a dependable choice when assembling compact furnace hardware or high-reliability pins.
