Custom 450 (also known as XM-25 or UNS S45000) is a unique martensitic precipitation-hardening stainless steel. It bridges the gap between the high strength of specialized alloys and the superior corrosion resistance of the 300-series (like 304).
Unlike many high-strength alloys that sacrifice corrosion resistance for hardness, Custom 450 remains resistant to atmospheric corrosion and many chemical environments while maintaining a yield strength significantly higher than standard stainless steels.
The alloyâs balanced chemistry allows it to be used in the solution-annealed condition or aged to higher strength levels.
| Element | Range (%) |
| Chromium (Cr) | 14.00 â 16.00 |
| Nickel (Ni) | 5.00 â 7.00 |
| Copper (Cu) | 1.25 â 1.75 |
| Molybdenum (Mo) | 0.50 â 1.00 |
| Columbium (Nb) | 8 x Carbon min |
| Carbon (C) | 0.05 max |
Custom 450 is typically used in the Annealed or H1000 aged condition to balance toughness and strength.
Tensile Strength: ~1,310 MPa (190 ksi)
Yield Strength (0.2% Offset): ~1,170 MPa (170 ksi)
Hardness (Rockwell C): 28 â 37 HRC
Elongation: 10% â 15%
Corrosion Resistance: It matches the corrosion resistance of Type 304 stainless steel in most environments but offers nearly triple the yield strength. It is highly resistant to stress-corrosion cracking.
Ease of Fabrication: Despite its strength, it can be machined, welded, and cold-formed similarly to other martensitic precipitation-hardening grades (like 17-4 PH).
One-Step Aging: It can be hardened by a single-step, low-temperature aging process, which reduces the risk of scaling and distortion compared to multi-step heat treatments.
Versatile Forms: Common in round bars, rods, and seamless rings (forged or rolled) due to its excellent forgeability.
Round Bars & Rods: Extensively used for high-strength shafting (especially pump and boat shafts), valve stems, and fasteners where 304 isn't strong enough and 410 isn't corrosion-resistant enough.
Rings & Forgings: Used in aerospace components, turbine blades, and specialized industrial equipment requiring high-integrity structural rings.
Chemical Processing: Parts for centrifuges, mixers, and pressure vessels where pitting resistance is critical.
