Alloy Family Ultra-Low Iron Nickel-Chromium-Molybdenum Superalloy

Scrap Classification and Value Drivers

  • High Nickel and Molybdenum Premium: Intrinsic melt valuation is driven by a high Nickel base (approx 57.0 to 62.0 percent), high Chromium (22.00 to 24.00 percent), and heavy Molybdenum (15.00 to 16.50 percent) content.

  • Ultra-Low Iron Content Standard: Iron is capped at a strict maximum of 1.50 percent (much lower than Hastelloy C-276, which allows up to 7.00 percent Fe), making uncontaminated Alloy 59 scrap critical for high-purity melt additions.

  • Ultra-Low Carbon and Silicon Controls: Maximum Carbon (0.010 percent) and Silicon (0.100 percent) limits eliminate intermetallic grain-boundary precipitation, requiring scrap to be completely un-carburized and clean.

  • Strict Grade Segregation: Must be kept completely isolated from Hastelloy C-276, Hastelloy C-22, Hastelloy C-2000, Alloy 625, and standard 300-series stainless steels.

  • Magnetic Response: Completely non-magnetic in all standard annealed and cold-worked conditions.

  • Cleanliness Requirements: Scrap must be free of carbon steel contamination, lead/zinc low-melting metals, fluoropolymer linings, rubber gaskets, grease, and heavy chemical slag.

Common Scrap Forms and Sources

  • Solid Scrap: Heavy chemical reactor plate drops, sheet offcuts, seamless and welded pipe stubs, flange remnants, valve bodies, fittings, and forged bar ends.

  • Turnings / Borings: Machining chips, turnings, and millings from valve and pump component manufacturing (requires thorough degreasing, drying, and magnetic screening for tramp iron).

  • Industrial Origin: Severe chemical process equipment, flue gas desulfurization (FGD) scrubbers, waste incineration gas scrubbers, pharmaceutical processing units, sour gas production systems, and phosphoric acid production equipment.
