Product Description

Alloy Overview

Alloy 52 (UNS designation N14052, W.Nr. 2.4478 / FeNi50) is a binary iron-nickel controlled-expansion alloy consisting of approximately 50.5% to 52% nickel with the balance iron. Trade names for this alloy include NILO 50 (or NILO 52), Pernifer 50, Invar 52, and Glass Sealing 52.

It is designed to match the thermal expansion characteristics of soft glasses (such as lead-alkali and soda-lime-silicate glasses) and specific ceramic materials up to approximately 500 C (930 F). Main applications include hermetic glass-to-metal seals, mercury switches, electronic tubes, automotive/industrial lamps, and semiconductor lead frames.

Chemical Composition (UNS N14052 / ASTM F30)

Values are weight percentages (wt %) based on standard specifications:

Element Min (%) Max (%) Nominal Target
Nickel 50.00 51.50 50.50 %
Cobalt 0.50 < 0.20 %
Manganese 0.60 0.30 %
Silicon 0.30 0.20 %
Carbon 0.05 < 0.03 %
Chromium 0.25 < 0.10 %
Phosphorus 0.025 < 0.015 %
Sulfur 0.025 < 0.015 %
Aluminum 0.10 < 0.05 %
Iron Balance Balance ~48.0 49.0 %

Note: The nickel content is tightly adjusted by manufacturers to maintain exact thermal expansion profiles.
