Product Description

EN AW-5183A (S Al 5183A / AlMg4.5Mn0.7(A)) is a European standardized variant within the high-strength aluminum-magnesium-manganese filler metal group. It is formatted as continuous wire spools for MIG (GMAW) welding and cut rods for TIG (GTAW) welding.

The "A" suffix in European standards (EN ISO 18273) indicates minor tightened controls on trace impurity limits compared to older or alternative sub-variants (like 5183B or 5183C), ensuring reliable high-strength performance when welding 5xxx-series structural alloys like EN AW-5083.

Chemical Composition (EN ISO 18273: S Al 5183A)

  • Magnesium (Mg): 4.30 to 5.20 percent

  • Manganese (Mn): 0.50 to 1.00 percent

  • Chromium (Cr): 0.05 to 0.25 percent

  • Titanium (Ti): 0.15 percent maximum

  • Silicon (Si): 0.25 to 0.40 percent maximum

  • Zinc (Zn): 0.25 percent maximum

  • Cryogenic Applications: Excellent impact toughness and mechanical ductility at temperatures down to -196 degrees Celsius (liquid nitrogen/LNG containment).

  • Primary Compatible Base Materials: EN AW-5083, EN AW-5086, EN AW-5456, EN AW-7039.

Temperature Limitation: Like all Al-Mg filler metals with over 3.0 percent Magnesium, welds made with EN AW-5183A are susceptible to intergranular stress corrosion cracking (SCC) if subjected to sustained service temperatures above 65 degrees Celsius (150 degrees Fahrenheit).
