Material Overview
Stainless Steel 904L (UNS N08904 / EN 1.4539 / N08904) is a non-stabilized high-alloy austenitic stainless steel with a low carbon content. Designed with substantial additions of chromium (20%), nickel (25%), molybdenum (4.5%), and copper (1.5%), 904L offers exceptional resistance to strong reducing acids like sulfuric acid, as well as high resistance to chloride pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress-corrosion cracking.

904L Solid Scrap Classifications & Characteristics
Types of Scrap: Solid plate offcuts, heavy sheet skeletons, pipe and tube cut ends, bar crop ends, forging returns, valve/pump cast components, and CNC turnings.
Scrap Forms & Grades:
Solid Scrap / Plate Offcuts: Clean, heavy solid plate, sheet, and forging ends preferred by foundries for induction furnace melt stock due to high elemental recovery rates.
Foundry Returns: Heavy gates, risers, and rejected cast parts free of slag, attachments, oxides, or non-ferrous contaminants.
Turnings / Borings: Machining chips (must be degreased, dry, and strictly segregated from standard 304 or 316 turnings).
Sorting & Identification:
Fully Non-Magnetic: Fully austenitic structure remains non-magnetic even after cold working, preventing confusion with magnetic ferritics (430) or martensitics (17-4PH).
PMI / XRF Spectrographic Testing: Critical to verify high Nickel (23% to 28%), Molybdenum (4% to 5%), and Copper (1% to 2%) content to prevent mixing with standard 316L or Super Austenitics (like 254 SMO / 6-Moly).
