Product Description

Material Overview

Stainless Steel 444 (UNS S44400 / EN 1.4521 / JIS SUS444) is a low-carbon, low-nitrogen, dual-stabilized ferritic stainless steel containing 18% chromium and 2% molybdenum. Dual-stabilized with titanium and niobium (columbium), SS 444 provides superior resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking compared to standard ferritic grades (such as 430) and austenitic grades (such as 304).

444 Scrap Classifications & Characteristics

  • Types of Scrap: Loose sheet offcuts, pressed bales/bundles, plate end-cuts, stamping scrap, skeleton cuts, turnings/borings, and foundry-grade solids.

  • Scrap Forms:

    • Loose Scrap: Unpressed plate cut-offs, punchings, skeleton sheets, and individual structural pieces.

    • Pressed Scrap: High-density hydraulic-compressed bales or bundles suitable for direct electric arc furnace (EAF) or induction furnace loading.

    • Foundry Scrap: Heavy, clean, solid pieces free of oil, attachments, non-ferrous contaminants, or lower-grade steel mixing.

  • Key Sorting Features:

    • Magnetic Property: Unlike 300-series austenitic stainless (304, 316), Type 444 is fully magnetic, which allows quick magnetic sorting from austenitic alloys.

    • Molybdenum Content: Must be verified via XRF/PMI analyzer to separate 444 (approx. 2% Mo) from non-moly ferritic grades like 430 or 409.

Key Industry Standards & Specifications

  • ASTM Standard: ASTM A240 / A240M (Plate, Sheet, and Strip), ASTM A268 (Seamless and Welded Tubing)

  • ASME Standard: ASME SA240

  • UNS Designation: UNS S44400 / UNS S44401

  • EN / W.Nr Standard: 1.4521 / X2CrMoTi18-2

  • JIS Standard: SUS 444

  • HS Code: 7204.49 (Stainless Steel Scrap) / 7219.33 (Flat-rolled Stainless Steel)
