
Material Overview
Stainless Steel 430 (UNS S43000 / EN 1.4016 / JIS SUS430) is a non-hardenable, plain chromium ferritic stainless steel containing 16% to 18% chromium. It combines good corrosion resistance, oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures, and excellent formability. Because it contains zero nickel content, SS 430 is widely used in automotive trim, appliance components, furnace parts, and low-cost structural foundry charge applications.

430 Foundry & Loose Scrap Classifications
Types of Scrap: Stamping skeleton scrap, plate/sheet cut-offs, punchings, loose factory clippings, bar end cuts, machine turnings/borings, and solid foundry melt stock.
Scrap Grades & Conditions:
Loose Foundry Scrap: Heavy, clean, unpressed plate cut-offs, punchings, and solid forging ends suited for induction and electric arc furnace charge.
Turnings / Borings: Clean machining chips (must be degreased and free of cutting fluids, moisture, or tramp elements).
Light / Skeleton Scrap: Sheet punchings and skeleton cut-offs (often baled or shredded for furnace efficiency).
Sorting & Quality Control:
Magnetic Property: Type 430 is fully ferromagnetic in all conditions, making magnetic overhead cranes and separators highly effective for sorting.
Nickel-Free Verification: XRF/PMI testing is critical to confirm the absence of intentional nickel and molybdenum additions, separating SS 430 from 300-series austenitic grades (304/316) or moly-bearing ferritics (444/434).
