Product Description

Monel Alloy 400—designated as UNS N04400 under American standards, DIN Werkstoff Nr. 2.4360 in Germany, AFNOR NU-30M in France, and BS NA13 in the United Kingdom—is a ductile, solid-solution nickel-copper binary alloy that gains mechanical strength solely through cold working rather than thermal precipitation. Governed primary supply specifications include ASTM B164 and ASME SB164 for hot-finished and cold-drawn rods and round bars, as well as NACE MR0175 and ISO 15156 certification for sour gas oilfield environments. Its chemical baseline requires a minimum of 63.0 percent nickel and 28.0 to 34.0 percent copper, with strict maximum impurity limits of 2.5 percent iron, 2.0 percent manganese, 0.50 percent silicon, 0.30 percent carbon, and 0.024 percent sulfur.

Physically, Alloy 400 features a density of 8.80 grams per cubic centimeter (0.318 pounds per cubic inch), a melting range of 1300 to 1350 degrees Celsius (2370 to 2460 degrees Fahrenheit), an elastic modulus of 179 gigapascals, and a thermal conductivity of 21.8 watts per meter-kelvin. It remains non-magnetic in the fully annealed state, though heavy cold work can raise its Curie point into the 20 to 50 degrees Celsius range, rendering it slightly magnetic at ambient room temperatures.

Mechanically, hot-finished or annealed bars specify a minimum tensile strength of 550 megapascals (80 ksi), a minimum 0.2 percent yield strength of 240 megapascals (35 ksi), a minimum elongation of 35 percent, and a typical hardness range of 110 to 150 Brinell. Cold-drawn, stress-relieved round bars yield higher strength properties, specifying a minimum tensile strength of 620 megapascals (90 ksi), a minimum yield strength of 415 megapascals (60 ksi), a minimum elongation of 15 percent, and typical hardness levels between 160 and 220 Brinell.
