GOST 35 and GOST 40 are high-quality structural carbon steels defined under the GOST 1050 standard. These are medium-carbon steels widely used in mechanical engineering for components that require higher strength than mild steel (like GOST 20) but still maintain good ductility and machinability.
The numbers "35" and "40" represent the average carbon content in hundredths of a percentage point.
| Element | GOST 35 (%) | GOST 40 (%) |
| Carbon (C) | 0.32 â 0.40 | 0.37 â 0.45 |
| Silicon (Si) | 0.17 â 0.37 | 0.17 â 0.37 |
| Manganese (Mn) | 0.50 â 0.80 | 0.50 â 0.80 |
| Chromium (Cr) | $\le$ 0.25 | $\le$ 0.25 |
| Nickel (Ni) | $\le$ 0.30 | $\le$ 0.30 |
| Sulfur (S) | $\le$ 0.04 | $\le$ 0.04 |
| Phosphorus (P) | $\le$ 0.04 | $\le$ 0.04 |
These grades are typically used in the Normalized or Quenched and Tempered (QT) condition. Steel 40 offers slightly higher strength and hardness but slightly lower elongation than Steel 35.
| Property (Normalized) | GOST 35 | GOST 40 |
| Tensile Strength ($\sigma_b$) | $\ge$ 530 MPa | $\ge$ 570 MPa |
| Yield Strength ($\sigma_s$) | $\ge$ 315 MPa | $\ge$ 335 MPa |
| Elongation ($\delta_5$) | $\ge$ 20% | $\ge$ 19% |
| Hardness (Brinell) | $\approx$ 163 â 197 HB | $\approx$ 187 â 217 HB |
Hardenability: Both grades have limited through-hardenability. They are excellent candidates for Surface Hardening (induction or flame hardening) to create a wear-resistant skin with a tough core.
Weldability: Limited. Because of the higher carbon content, these steels are prone to cracking if welded without precautions. Preheating to 150â200°C and post-weld heat treatment are generally recommended.
Machinability: Very good. These grades are favorite materials for high-volume turning, milling, and drilling operations.
Forging: They have excellent hot-forming characteristics, typically forged at temperatures between 1280°C and 750°C.
If you are sourcing these materials outside the CIS region, the following grades are the closest matches:

| Steel 35 | 1035 | C35 / 1.0501 | 35 | S35C |
| Steel 40 | 1040 | C40 / 1.0511 | 40 | S40C |
