Product Description

1. Technical Specifications

EN26 is defined by its ability to maintain its mechanical properties even in very large diameters where other steels might lose core strength.

  • Standard: BS 970:1991 (826M40) / BS 970:1955 (EN26).

  • Equivalent Grades: * Germany: 40NiMoCr10-4 (W.Nr 1.6745)

    • Australia: AS 1444-1996 X9940

  • Common Supply Condition: Hardened and Tempered (Condition V, W, or X).

2. Chemical Composition (%)

The high Nickel content ($2.5\%$) is the standout feature, providing deep hardenability and excellent resistance to shock and impact.

Element Range (%)
Carbon (C) 0.36 “ 0.44
Nickel (Ni) 2.30 “ 2.80
Chromium (Cr) 0.50 “ 0.80
Molybdenum (Mo) 0.45 “ 0.65
Manganese (Mn) 0.45 “ 0.70
Silicon (Si) 0.10 “ 0.35

3. Mechanical Properties (Typical)

EN26 bars are designed for extreme torque and surface pressure.

  • Tensile Strength: 1000 “ 1225 MPa (Condition V/W).

  • Yield Strength: ‰ 850 MPa.

  • Hardness: 293 “ 375 HB (approx. 31“40 HRC).

  • Impact Strength: Excellent, even at low temperatures, making it resistant to brittle fracture.

4. Key Features

  • Deep Hardenability: Unlike 4140 or EN24, which may have softer cores in large diameters, EN26 achieves uniform strength across large cross-sections (up to 250mm+).

  • Surface Hardening: It can be further surface hardened via Induction Hardening or Nitriding to achieve a case hardness of up to 60 HRC while maintaining a tough core.

  • Machinability: Despite its high strength, it remains reasonably machinable in the hardened and tempered state using carbide tooling.

5. Applications

EN26 bars and rings are the go-to choice for "mission-critical" parts:

  • Aerospace: Aircraft undercarriages, aero-engine parts, and airframe components.

  • Automotive: Crankshafts, differential shafts, and connecting rods.

  • Oil & Gas: High-pressure hydraulic shafts, spindles, and mandrel bars.

  • Industrial: Heavy-duty gears, torsion bars, and high-strength bolts/studs.

Comparison: EN24 vs. EN26
