Material Overview
Duplex 2205 (UNS S31803 / UNS S32205 / EN 1.4462) is a nitrogen-enhanced austenitic-ferritic dual-phase stainless steel. Containing roughly 22% chromium, 5% nickel, and 3% molybdenum, it combines high mechanical strength (roughly double that of conventional austenitic grades like 304 or 316) with superior resistance to chloride stress-corrosion cracking, pitting, and crevice corrosion.

Duplex 2205 Scrap & Foundry Grade Characteristics
Types of Scrap: Plate offcuts, pipe ends, forging crops, bar ends, sheet skeletons, valve/pump casting gates and risers, CNC turnings, and solid foundry melt stock.
Scrap Classifications:
Heavy Solid Scrap: Plate cut-offs, pipe crops, and heavy forgings (preferred melt stock for induction and arc furnaces).
Turnings & Chips: Machining borings (must be degreased, dried, and free from cross-contamination with standard 300-series or carbon steel turnings).
Foundry Grade: High-purity, clean pieces free of attachments, oils, moisture, or non-ferrous elements.
Sorting & Quality Verification:
Magnetic Response: Partially/moderately ferromagnetic due to its 50/50 ferrite-austenite microstructural balance. This distinguishes it from fully non-magnetic austenitic stainless steels (304, 316) and fully magnetic ferritics/martensitics (430, 410).
PMI / XRF Testing: Critical to verify the 3.0% Molybdenum and 22% Chromium levels, preventing mixing with Lean Duplex (e.g., 2101) or Super Duplex (e.g., 2507).
