Product Description

Technical Designations & Equivalents

Standard Designation
Werkstoff Nr. (WNR) 3.4365
EN (European) EN AW-7075 / EN AW-AlZn5.5MgCu
UNS (USA) A97075
DIN (Old) AlZnMgCu1.5

Mechanical Properties (T6 / T651 Temper)

WNr 3.4365 is one of the strongest aluminum alloys commercially available. In the T651 condition (stress-relieved plate), it rivals the strength of many structural steels.

Property Value (Typical)
Tensile Strength ($R_m$) 540 “ 600 MPa
Yield Strength ($R_{p0.2}$) 480 “ 540 MPa
Elongation ($A_5$) 7% “ 11%
Hardness (Brinell) 150 “ 160 HB
Density 2.81 g/cm³

Supply Forms: Plates, Sheets & Blocks

1. WNr 3.4365 Blocks (Tooling Grade)

Because of its extreme hardness and stability, 3.4365 is the industry standard for mould-making and high-stress jigs.

  • Stability: The T651 temper is critical for blocks; it ensures that after you mill away 50% of the material, the remaining part does not bow or twist.

  • Thickness: Often stocked in thicknesses up to 200mm or even 300mm for heavy engineering.

2. WNr 3.4365 Plates & Sheets

  • High-Stress Components: Used for aerospace bulkheads where tensile stress is at its peak.

  • Surface Protection: Like 2014A, 7075 is highly susceptible to corrosion. For sheet metal applications, it is almost always supplied as Alclad 7075 to protect the high-strength core from pitting.

3.4365 vs. 3.1255: Which to choose?

Feature 3.1255 (2014A) 3.4365 (7075)
Strength High Extreme
Machinability Excellent (Short chips) Excellent
Fatigue Resistance Good Moderate (Sensitive to notches)
Main Element Copper (Cu) Zinc (Zn)
Primary Use General Aerospace / Forgings Highly Stressed Structures / Molds

Essential Considerations

  • Corrosion Performance: 3.4365 is prone to Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) if used in high-heat, high-saline environments. Specialized tempers like T73 are available if SCC is a major concern, though they reduce the total strength by about 10-15%.

  • Welding: Strictly non-weldable by standard fusion methods. Attempting to weld 3.4365 will result in severe cracking and a nearly 50% loss in strength at the heat-affected zone.

  • Anodizing: It responds very well to hard-anodizing, which creates a wear-resistant "ceramic" surface layer, making it ideal for sliding mechanical parts.
