A Cast Iron Double Flange Sluice Valve (often referred to interchangeable with a heavy-duty Gate Valve) is a heavy-duty isolation valve designed primarily for infrastructure water supply, irrigation networks, sewage disposal, and large-scale industrial fluid systems.
The term Double Flange indicates that both sides of the valve body feature an integrated, raised circular rim (flange). These flanges are bolted directly to matching pipe flanges, creating a highly rigid, leak-proof mechanical joint capable of handling significant bending moments and pressure lines.
Sluice valves are designed to provide standard, full-bore flow path optimization with minimum friction losses. Their production typically adheres to major regional and global quality baselines.
IS 14846 / IS 780: The standard for design, dimensions, and hydrostatic testing.
BS 5163 / EN 1171: British and European standards governing flanged iron gate valves for waterworks.
Pressure Classes: Typically specified as PN 10 (10 bar / 1.0 MPa max working pressure) or PN 16 (16 bar / 1.6 MPa max working pressure).
Non-Rising Stem (Inside Screw): The internal stem thread engages directly into the internal wedge gate. When you turn the handwheel, the stem rotates in place, pulling the wedge up or down. Because the stem doesn't move vertically outside the body, these are ideal for compact spaces or underground buried service.
Rising Stem (Outside Screw & Yoke - OS&Y): The stem is threaded outside the packing box. As the handwheel turns, the stem rises visually out of the top. This provides immediate visual indication of whether the valve is open or closed, making it highly preferred for safety-critical plant environments and fire fighting networks.
To ensure long operational life in corrosive water or slurry environments, the components of a standard sluice valve are carefully selected:
| Valve Component | Common Material Grade | Technical Purpose |
| Body, Bonnet & Handwheel | Cast Iron (ASTM A126 Class B / IS 210 Gr. FG 200) | Provides structural pressure containment, rigid strength, and vibration dampening. |
| Internal Wedge / Gate | Solid Cast Iron or Ductile Iron encapsulated in EPDM rubber | The physical block. Rubber encapsulation (Resilient Seating) provides a bubble-tight seal without needing body grooves. |
| Stem / Spindle | Stainless Steel (AISI 410 / AISI 304 / 12 Cr 12) | Resists high torque twist stresses and protects against rust pitting near the packing gland. |
| Seat Rings & Trim | Leaded Tin Bronze / Gunmetal (IS 318 Gr. LTB2) | Used in metal-seated variations. Provides excellent wear resistance when the wedge contacts the seating face. |
If you are sourcing or specifying an industrial assembly, here are the leading standard configurations from trusted valve manufacturers:
For mid-sized distribution systems, these valves offer standard configurations using premium internal metallurgy like gunmetal and stainless steel stems to prevent seat scoring.
The 200mm Cast Iron Sluice Valve PN 1.6 Flanged with Rising Stem 1079D Zoloto features an Outside Screw & Yoke (OS&Y) rising stem design. It uses a solid wedge with premium bronze seat rings and is rated for PN 16 hydrostatic test loads.
The 150mm Cast Iron Wedge Gate Sluice Valve, Non Rising Type, Flanged, CR-32B - SANT Valves is configured for tighter footprints with an internal non-rising stem mechanism. Built to IS 14846 design specs, it employs copper-alloy rings and a reliable rubber O-ring gland packing system.
Avoid Throttling: Sluice valves are engineered strictly for fully open or fully closed isolation. Leaving the wedge partially open creates severe turbulent flow. This velocity will quickly erode the seat rings and cause the gate to vibrate, permanently damaging the internal alignment.
Gland Packing Leakage: If water begins leaking up along the stem, tighten the gland flange nuts evenly. If the leak persists, depressurize the line and replace the internal braided packing or rubber O-rings.
Flange Bolting Torque: When installing a double flange assembly, always tighten the flange bolts in a cross-star pattern to avoid uneven loading, which can crack the cast iron flanges under high pressure.
