Product Description

ASTM A335 Grade P1 is a low-alloy ferritic steel often referred to as Carbon-Molybdenum (C-0.5Mo) steel. While the ASTM A335 specification technically covers pipes intended for high-temperature service, the "P1" chemistry is frequently used to manufacture round bars (often specified under equivalent standards like ASTM A182 F1 or commercial bar standards) for use in power plants, refineries, and petrochemical industries.

1. Chemical Composition

The P1 grade is characterized by its molybdenum content, which enhances its creep strength and performance at elevated temperatures compared to standard carbon steel.

Element Composition (%)
Carbon (C) 0.10 “ 0.20
Manganese (Mn) 0.30 “ 0.80
Phosphorus (P) ‰ 0.025
Sulfur (S) ‰ 0.025
Silicon (Si) 0.10 “ 0.50
Molybdenum (Mo) 0.44 “ 0.65
Chromium (Cr) Minimal/Not added

2. Mechanical Properties

P1 material provides a balance of ductility and high-temperature strength.

  • Tensile Strength: ‰ 55 ksi (380 MPa)

  • Yield Strength: ‰ 30 ksi (205 MPa)

  • Elongation: ‰ 30% (longitudinal)

  • Heat Treatment: Usually supplied in Annealed, Normalized & Tempered, or Isothermal Annealed conditions to ensure structural stability.

3. Key Characteristics & Applications

  • Creep Resistance: The 0.5% Molybdenum addition makes it significantly more resistant to "creep" (deformation under constant stress at high temperatures) than carbon steel.

  • Temperature Limit: Ideally used for services up to approx. 455C (850F). Above this temperature, it may be susceptible to graphitization (where carbides turn into graphite, weakening the steel).

  • Weldability: Excellent weldability due to low carbon and alloy content; however, preheating and post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) are often recommended for thicker sections to prevent cracking.

  • Common Uses:

    • Boiler tubes and high-pressure steam lines.

    • Heat exchanger components.

    • Pressure vessel forgings (when in bar/forging form).

    • Oil & Gas distillation columns.

4. P1 vs. P11 (The "Step Up")

If your application requires higher corrosion or oxidation resistance, the industry often moves to Grade P11.

  • P1: Carbon-Molybdenum (0.5% Mo). Economical, moderate heat resistance.

  • P11: Chrome-Moly (1.25% Cr, 0.5% Mo). Added Chromium provides better protection against scaling and oxidation at higher temperatures.
