EN AW-AlMg4.5Mn0.7(C) (S Al 5183 / EN ISO 18273) is a high-strength, non-heat-treatable aluminum-magnesium-manganese filler metal wire and rod supplied for MIG (GMAW) and TIG (GTAW) welding.

In European standards (EN ISO 18273), the "(C)" designation denotes a specific chemical composition sub-variant within the 5183 family. It is formulated to match the mechanical requirements of high-magnesium 5xxx-series structural alloys (such as EN AW-5083), delivering higher as-welded tensile yield strength than standard ER5356 or ER4043 filler materials.

Chemical Composition (EN ISO 18273 / AWS A5.10)

  • Magnesium (Mg): 4.30 to 5.20 percent

  • Manganese (Mn): 0.50 to 1.00 percent

  • Chromium (Cr): 0.05 to 0.25 percent

  • Titanium (Ti): 0.15 percent maximum

  • Iron (Fe): 0.40 percent maximum

  • Silicon (Si): 0.40 percent maximum

  • Zinc (Zn): 0.25 percent maximum

  • Copper (Cu): 0.10 percent maximum

  • Aluminum (Al): Balance

Key Mechanical and Physical Properties (As-Welded)

  • Tensile Strength: 275 MPa minimum (40 ksi)

  • Yield Strength: 125 to 130 MPa minimum (18 to 19 ksi)

  • Elongation: 17 to 18 percent minimum

  • Melting Range: 574 to 638 degrees Celsius

  • Density: 2.66 g/cm³

  • Color Match: Excellent white and silver match post-anodizing on 5xxx alloys.

Technical Performance and Applications

  • Marine and Offshore: Superior resistance to pitting and stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in saltwater and marine atmospheres.

  • Cryogenic Pressure Vessels: Outstanding toughness at extremely low temperatures, making it a standard choice for LNG storage tanks and processing equipment.

  • Compatible Base Metals: Used primarily for joining EN AW-5083, EN AW-5086, EN AW-5456, and EN AW-7039.

Temperature Warning: Due to the high magnesium content (greater than 3.0 percent), welded joints using AlMg4.5Mn0.7(C) are susceptible to intergranular stress corrosion cracking if subjected to sustained operating temperatures above 65 degrees Celsius (150 degrees Fahrenheit).
