5154 Aluminium (AlMg3.5) is a medium-to-high strength, non-heat-treatable alloy from the 5000 series (Aluminium-Magnesium family). It is specifically recognized for its excellent corrosion resistance, particularly in marine environments, and its superior weldability.
| Standard | Designation |
| ISO | AlMg3.5 |
| WNr (Werkstoffnummer) | 3.3535 (Note: 3.3535 is also associated with 5754, but 5154 is the closer AlMg3.5 match) |
| DIN | AlMg3.5 |
| EN AW | 5154A / 5154 |
| UNS | A95154 |
| BS (UK) | N5 |
| AFNOR (FR) | AG3C |
The "3.5" in AlMg3.5 refers to the nominal Magnesium content, which provides the alloy's strength and corrosion resistance.
Magnesium (Mg): 3.10 3.90%
Manganese (Mn): 0.10 0.50%
Chromium (Cr): 0.15 0.35%
Iron (Fe): 0.40% max
Silicon (Si): 0.25% max
Aluminium (Al): Remainder
Properties vary significantly based on the temper (e.g., O for annealed, H111 for work-hardened).
| Property | Annealed (O / H111) | Work-Hardened (e.g., H34) |
| Tensile Strength ($R_m$) | 215 275 MPa | 270 325 MPa |
| Yield Strength ($R_{p0.2}$) | 85 120 MPa | 200 250 MPa |
| Elongation ($A_{50mm}$) | 15 25% | 5 12% |
| Hardness (HB) | 60 | 85 |
Density: 2.66 $g/cm3$
Melting Range: 593C 643C
Thermal Conductivity: 127 W/m·K
Electrical Conductivity: 32% IACS
Modulus of Elasticity: 69 GPa
Due to its resistance to saltwater and chemicals, 5154 is a "workhorse" for heavy-duty industrial fabrication:
Marine Industry: Ship hulls, masts, and saltwater piping.
Pressure Vessels: Unfired welded pressure vessels and storage tanks.
Chemical Industry: Equipment for handling highly corrosive chemicals (e.g., hydrogen peroxide).
Fasteners: Cold-headed rivets and wire mesh cloth.
Transportation: Trailer tanks and automotive structural parts.
Weldability: Excellent. It can be welded using MIG and TIG methods with filler alloys like 5356 or 5554.
Machinability: Poor to Fair. Like most high-magnesium alloys, it can be "gummy" during machining; best results are found in harder tempers.
Corrosion Resistance: Excellent. Superior resistance to atmospheric and seawater corrosion compared to the 2000 or 7000 series.
