2014 Aluminium (AlCu4SiMg) is a high-strength, heat-treatable alloy from the 2000 series (Aluminium-Copper family). Often referred to as "Aviation Grade," it is one of the strongest aluminium alloys available, offering excellent hardness and mechanical properties, though it requires protection against corrosion.
| Standard | Designation |
| ISO | AlCu4SiMg |
| WNr (Werkstoffnummer) | 3.1255 |
| DIN | AlCuSiMg |
| EN AW | 2014 / 2014A |
| UNS | A92014 |
| AFNOR (FR) | AU4SG |
The addition of Copper provides significant strength through heat treatment, while Silicon and Magnesium improve the alloy's response to artificial aging.
Copper (Cu): 3.90 5.00%
Silicon (Si): 0.50 1.20%
Magnesium (Mg): 0.20 0.80%
Manganese (Mn): 0.40 1.20%
Aluminium (Al): Remainder
The T6 temper (solution heat-treated and artificially aged) is the most common state for 2014 plates and sheets to maximize strength.
| Property | Value (Typical T6) |
| Tensile Strength ($R_m$) | 440 480 MPa |
| Yield Strength ($R_{p0.2}$) | 390 420 MPa |
| Elongation ($A_{50mm}$) | 7 10% |
| Hardness (HB) | 135 145 |
Density: 2.80 $g/cm3$ (slightly heavier than 5000/6000 series due to copper)
Melting Range: 505C 640C
Thermal Conductivity: 155 W/m·K
Modulus of Elasticity: 73 GPa
2014 is used where an extremely high strength-to-weight ratio is required, but where environment-driven corrosion is not the primary concern.
Aerospace: Aircraft structures, skins, and frames.
Military: High-strength transport components and rocket motor cases.
Heavy Industry: Forged hydraulic cylinders, cylinders, and pistons.
Automotive: High-performance wheels and structural frames.
Machinability: Excellent. It produces small, broken chips and a high-quality surface finish, making it a favorite for precision-turned parts.
Weldability: Poor. It is generally considered difficult to weld via arc welding (MIG/TIG) due to the risk of hot cracking. It is more commonly joined by rivets or mechanical fasteners.
Corrosion Resistance: Low. Because of the high copper content, it is susceptible to atmospheric corrosion. In many applications, it is Clad (layered with pure aluminium) or anodized for protection.
| Feature | 2014 (AlCuSiMg) | 5083 (AlMg4.5) |
