15-5PH / 17-4PH / Grade 630 Material Overview
15-5PH (UNS S15500 / XM-12) and 17-4PH (UNS S17400 / AISI 630) are chromium-nickel-copper precipitation-hardening martensitic stainless steels. Both alloys provide high strength, hardness, and excellent corrosion resistance. 17-4PH (Grade 630) is the most widely used precipitation-hardening steel, while 15-5PH is a ferrite-free refinement designed for improved transverse toughness and forging capability.

Turning Scrap & Machining Chip Characteristics
Types of Turning Scrap: Machining chips, lathe swarf, CNC borings, milling turnings, centerless grinding sludge, and drill shavings.
Key Quality & Processing Specifications:
Degreasing & Oil Moisture Content: Clean turning scrap must be centrifuge-processed or thermally dried to remove soluble machining oils, coolants, and moisture prior to melting.
Briquetted / Compacting Grade: Loose turnings are often hydraulically compressed into dense briquettes or pucks to increase bulk density and prevent rapid oxidation in induction furnaces.
Ferromagnetic Property: Fully magnetic in both solution-annealed and age-hardened conditions, enabling easy mechanical crane handling and sorting from non-ferrous metals.
PMI / Chemistry Verification: XRF spectrographic analysis is essential to verify copper content (2.5% to 5.0%) and separate 15-5PH/17-4PH turnings from standard non-copper martensitics (like 410, 420, or F6NM) and austenitic grades (304, 316).
